Course Outline

This is an online course, you have up to two years to complete, but the course can be completed in a shorter time frame. During the course, you have access to our learning site to complete the course and be allocated a tutor to guide and support you. For each unit there will be lessons that you can complete at your own pace, there will also be an optional webinar lesson each month per unit (recordings are available for those unable to attend in person). After the lessons, you will need to complete the online assignments, being a Level 5 qualification, you will be expected to carry out some further research (some initial reference points will be provided) and you will also need to apply to your own teaching practice.

You will complete the assignments on the Moodle site, as well as having access to teaching hours which will be observed. Below the requirements for teaching hours, placements and observations are covered in more detail. For the assignments, these may be a written task, reflective journal or producing evidence from your teaching role. Each assignment has the criteria marked on it that it aims to cover. However, there may be cases where these are not fully covered. Your tutor will provide feedback online where you have uploaded your work as well as send you a progress report with feedback telling you what else you need to do to complete the assignment.

At the end of your course, once you have completed all units of the course, you will need to have a 30-minute professional discussion. This will be conducted with two qualified teachers, one from MKLC and one from your placement.

Teaching hours

Learners must have access to a work placement within a further education setting throughout the course. The placement should be a minimum of 250 hours, with at least 150 dedicated to teaching practice.

Teaching practice hours

The 150 hours of teaching practice, need to consist of:

• At least 100 hours in your subject area, of which a minimum of 80 hours must be face-to-face delivery.

• A minimum of 20 hours live remote delivery, i.e. zoom, teams etc. Remote delivery may not be feasible for SEND or in other exceptional circumstances, if you believe this may affect you, please contact info@mklc.co.uk and we can advise on the adjustments available.

Non-teaching practice

The non-teaching practice hours should be spent completing professional activities such as:

• team meetings

• planning

• interviews

• assessment meetings

• observations

• CPD activities.

Mentors

All trainee teachers should have support from two staff members at their placement, they must be willing to complete any necessary training at the commencement of the course and liaise with MKLC through your course.

Mentor 1

Subject Specialist competent in and teaching your subject area, offering subject- specific support. This staff member should be available to dedicate 30 minutes per week for support and engagement in assessments, especially in the subject-specific aspect.

Mentor 2

Local Pastoral Support Mentor for general advice and support. This mentor may be supporting a group of trainee teachers. The recommended support time is 30 minutes per trainee per week. This mentor is expected to liaise with the provider regarding ongoing progress reports.

Observations

You will need to have a minimum of 10 observations, the majority of these ideally to groups of at least ten learners. Each observation must be a minimum of 45 minutes and completed either by MKLC or your subject specialist placement mentor. MKLC will complete two of your observations spaced out during your course. The observations must be spaced throughout your qualification, with a minimum of 10 days between observations. A maximum of two observations may be of your live remote delivery and one observation can be assessed remotely.

Location

You must experience placements in at least two different locations to gain exposure to diverse teaching environments, a minimum of 20 non-teaching hours should be dedicated to activities in the second location. Ideally, this should be a different provider, however, for larger providers, it is acceptable for the second placement to be in a different subject area/and or department within the same provider.
